Happy Chinese New Year from WenLin Chinese School

On Sunday 29 January, WenLin Chinese School is throwing open its doors to students, their families and the local community, to mark the 2023 lunar year of the rabbit. A packed day of activities will be hosted at the school’s flagship venue, Belleville Primary School SW11, from 2 pm onwards.

Guests can browse and shop from stalls including Chinese book publisher Cypress Books and sample Chinese dumplings from neighbourhood restaurant The Good Earth. Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr, Jeremy Ambache, will welcome guests and will distribute certificates to WenLin Chinese School students who recently sat and passed a number of the internationally-recognised YCT and HSK Chinese exams.

Haiyun Wang, Principal and Founder of WenLin Chinese School will make a welcome address before celebrations continue with a Lion Dance demonstration and workshop from the London Lion Dance Troupe, alongside performances featuring Chinese traditional dance. Songs will also be performed, including Jing-Ju ‘SuoLin Nang’, using traditional instruments such as the Erhu, alongside a group rendition of the Chinese folk song Mo Li Hua (Jasmine flower) and a Wushu (Chinese martial arts) demonstration. Performances will finish with a drum dance from the celebrated London Ansei drum team. Guests will also be able to enjoy family games, and more opportunities to taste traditional Chinese dishes.

WenLin Chinese School is also encouraging guests to write Happy New Year wishes on red paper, a colour that symbolises energy, happiness and good luck in Chinese culture, to mark the New Year and to celebrate language learning. People can write wishes in their native language together with an English translation.

Haiyun Wang said: “We can’t wait to welcome people to our New Year celebrations to mark the Year of the Rabbit. It promises to be a fun-filled day and an opportunity for everyone to find out more about Chinese culture and traditions, as well as celebrate the joy of learning languages.”

A Chinese Lantern Festival will take place the following week on Saturday 4 February from 11.30am to 2.30pm, at WenLin Chinese School’s Dulwich site, with the event traditionally marking the end of the New Year celebrations. People are welcome to attend the events on either or both days, and no registration in advance of the events is required.

Partners supporting WenLin Chinese School’s New Year event include Cypress Books, Good Earth, the London Ansai Drum Team, the London Lion Dance Troupe and the UK Chinese Opera Association. Proceeds from the event will be donated to WenLin Chinese School’s chosen charity, SENTALK.
